Posted Oct. 16,2017. FOR SALE. 7-string bass gamba, based on Jacob Stainer models; originally made in 2003 to the specifications of Mark Moya,* of Covina, California, and extensively reworked by John Pringle in 2014. Pringle's modifications included reconfiguring the neck, installing a new bridge from the estate of viol maker Dietrich Kessler, and moving the nut to create a more manageable, shortened scale. The tailpiece is also drilled to allow for playing the instrument with 6 strings if desired.
If you can handle a big instrument, this gamba is quite handsome; and its tone is quite warm and sonorous. Like other Stainer gambas, it is still quite a large instrument -- the vibrating string length is 28.24 inches (71.75 cm) -- with deep ribs. It can easily hold its own against other instruments. August Wenzinger and his colleague Hannelore Mueller played on matching Stainer viols.
The instrument comes without a case, and we would prefer not to ship. The instrument is available for audition in Durham. Shipping can be arranged at cost.
$2,100 firm (plus shipping, if applicable). We invite you to compare this instrument to other 7-string gambas costing 3-4 times as much.

*Moya composes Baroque-style music for viol and other early instruments. He was commissioned to write a new work for viol consort by Suzanne Ferguson, president of the VdGSA, in 2006. The piece was offered as part of the annual VdGSA Conclave Auction. Moya designed not only Stainer-influenced bass gambas but also Baroque violins.
